Il Leie è il fiume più bello delle Fiandre e anche il più glorioso. Così descrisse il poeta Karel van de Woestijne all'inizio del XX secolo IL FIUME D'ORO. Questa era solo una delle superlativi attribuiti al Leie, a causa del "oro" - (colorato e produttivo) lino giallo che un tempo galleggiava in decomposizione per settimane.
Il fiume lungo 202 km nasce come "la Lys" in Francia, nelle colline nordiche dell'Artois vicino al paesino di Lisbourg (a ovest di Béthune). Per quasi 30 km il giovane fiume forma il confine franco-belga e poi entra nel nostro paese a Menen. Il Leie scorre quindi lungo Kortrijk e Deinze verso Gand, dove sfocia nello Schelda. Dopo pesanti inondazioni nel 1965 e 1966, quasi l'intero corso belga è stato canalizzato, portando all'abbattimento di ben 25 meandri fluviali ...
Un intervento drastico nella bellezza del paesaggio che ha inoltre influito negativamente sulla naturale capacità di autolavaggio del corso d'acqua, originariamente fortemente tortuoso. Ma così sono anche nati i numerosi meravigliosi spazi naturali lungo i vecchi bracci del fiume tagliati.
