Antica municipalità lungo la strada romana Belle-Wervik. Già conosciuta nel 1105 come Noua Ecclesia. Nel 1080 fu consacrata una chiesa romanica, in successione a una cappella più antica. I monaci di Sint-Jan-ten-Berghe ne furono i fondatori. Quella chiesa fu distrutta e ricostruita più volte. L'attuale chiesa, con tre navate, fu costruita solo nel 1922-23, in stile neo-romanico, da Jozef Viérin. Essa sostituì la chiesa tardo-gotica del XVI secolo, distrutta durante la Prima Guerra Mondiale, tranne la facciata sud-occidentale. Interno: statua di Gesù in croce (1600), via crucis di C. Vallaeys (1923), due vetrate commemorano l'omicidio di tre religiosi a Reningelst. Ogni quarto d'ora suonano le quattro piccole campane del carillon.
