A causa dell'industrializzazione e della enorme crescita della popolazione, il centro città nella seconda metà del XIX secolo diventa sovraffollato, insalubre e malsano. In questo quartiere vivono circa 3000 lavoratori del settore tessile. I quartieri operai diventano focolai di colera, tifo e vaiolo. L'amministrazione comunale interviene. I canali e i corsi d'acqua inquinati vengono coperti o riempiti. Fabbriche puzzolenti e baracche fatiscenti lasciano spazio ad ampie strade e grandi case borghesi. La borghesia si impadronisce della città. Molti lavoratori si stabiliscono presso le nuove aziende nel nord, est e ovest della città.
In questo luogo nasce una nuova boulevard, come collegamento tra il sud della stazione e il centro della città.
