Quando la sera del 19 agosto 1914 si udirono all'improvviso colpi di arma da fuoco in città, il comandante tedesco Stenger fu colpito a morte sul balcone della casa del sindaco Tielemans. Nelle ore successive, molte case furono incendiate e uomini, donne e bambini furono cacciati nella Grand Place. Lì rimasero per ore, incerti sul loro destino. Nelle ore seguenti, due gruppi di ostaggi sarebbero stati portati fuori città e i cittadini innocenti furono fucilati.
