Il canale che attraversa Beernem è quello da Ostenda a Gand. La via navigabile esiste dal 1623. Poiché viaggiare in nave era molto più confortevole all'epoca rispetto a un viaggio su strada, un tempo fu istituito un lussuoso trasporto acqueo tra Gand e Bruges. Questo servizio navetta quotidiano (di 46 km) è continuato fino a metà del 19° secolo.
