Le canal qui traverse Beernem est celui d'Ostende à Gand. La voie navigable existe depuis 1623. Comme voyager par bateau était alors beaucoup plus confortable qu'un voyage par la route, une luxueuse diligence fluviale a été mise en place entre Gand et Bruges. Ce service de navette quotidien (sur 46 km) a existé jusqu'au milieu du 19e siècle.
