Het kanaal dat Beernem doorsnijdt is dat van Oostende naar Gent. De waterweg bestaat al sedert 1623. Omdat reizen per schip toen veel comfortabeler was dan een reis over de weg, werd tussen Gent en Brugge ooit een luxueuze waterkoets ingelegd. Deze dagelijkse pendeldienst (over 46 km) bleef bestaan tot midden de 19de eeuw.
