Overslag si trova lungo entrambi i lati del confine belgo-olandese. È stata costituita autonomamente durante il periodo francese (circa 1800), ma dopo la sconfitta di Napoleone a Waterloo nel 1815, il villaggio è stato unito grazie all'unione dei Paesi Bassi settentrionali e meridionali. Con l'indipendenza del Belgio, i confini originali sono stati ripristinati. Per questo motivo qui ci sono 4 pietre di confine.
Il confine ha avuto un ruolo molto determinante nel funzionamento di questo villaggio, poiché leggi e regolamenti non sono sempre gli stessi su entrambi i lati del confine in periodi di guerra. Questo confine è stato anche molto influente nell'insorgere dell'epidemia di febbre catarrale bovina nel 2001 e recentemente nel contesto delle misure relative al coronavirus.
