Questa area picnic si trova all'angolo della Lammerdam che ci porta ai Gulke Wells.

La riserva naturale di Gulke Putten si trova al confine meridionale di quello che un tempo era lo storico Bulskampveld. Si estendeva tra Gand e Bruges ed era la più grande area di brughiera della Contea delle Fiandre. Il termine "campo" si riferiva alle terre desolate disabitate. Su questi terreni sabbiosi sono state trovate vegetazione di erica e praterie povere. A partire dal XV secolo furono piantati boschi nelle zone periferiche.

Sulle mappe storiche troviamo numerosi stagni a sud-est di Bruges. Questi "stagni campali" del tardo medioevo sono stati creati per l'allevamento ittico arginare i torrenti. Il nome "By de Gulke Putten" si riferirebbe anche a tali stagni per pesci.
