Tra il Forte Sint-Marie e il Forte Zwijndrecht, a partire dal 1870, fu costruita una linea di difesa militare.
Nelle paludi, questa linea di difesa consisteva in una diga, nella zona sabbiosa in una strada militare (Krijgsbaan). Lo scavo per la diga formò un lungo fossato di difesa (il Lange Eind) con 2 posti di difesa: la Halve Maan e la Put van Fien. La Put van Fien è un relitto della breccia della diga del 1953 che sommersise gran parte di Kallo e Melsele. Ora la E34 taglia la linea in due. La diga è liberamente accessibile ai pedoni. Nella parte meridionale è possibile anche andare in bicicletta.
