Il torrente serpeggia attraverso i polder di Bazel e Kruibeke , un mosaico verde-blu di acque libere, piane fangose, saline e foreste paludose, proprio lungo la Schelda.
L'attuale torrente si è formato in seguito alle rotture degli argini avvenute tra il XVIII e il XIX secolo.
L'area fa parte del Piano Sigma per la gestione del rischio di alluvione e il ripristino della natura. In caso di piena estrema, il torrente e l'area circostante possono trattenere 300 milioni di litri d'acqua. Un tempo terreni prevalentemente agricoli, i polder sono oggi una delle più grandi riserve naturali soggette a maree in Belgio.
