Der Bach schlängelt sich durch die Polder Bazel und Kruibeke , ein bläulich-grünes Mosaik aus offenem Wasser, Mooren, Sümpfen und sumpfigen Wäldern, entlang der Schelde.
Der heutige Bach entstand durch Dammbrüche im 18. und 19. Jahrhundert.
Das Gebiet ist Teil des Sigma-Plans für Hochwasserrisikomanagement und Naturrestaurierung. Bei extremen Überschwemmungen können der Bach und seine Umgebung 300 Millionen Liter Wasser speichern. Die Polder, früher hauptsächlich landwirtschaftlich genutzt, sind heute eines der größten natürlichen Gezeitenreservoirs Belgiens.
