The creek meanders through the polders of Bazel and Kruibeke , a green-blue mosaic of open water, mudflats, salt marshes and swamp forest, right along the Scheldt.
The current creek was formed by dike breaches in the 18th and 19th centuries.
The area is part of the Sigma Plan for flood risk management and nature restoration. During extremely high water, the creek and the surrounding area can buffer 300 million liters of water. Formerly largely agricultural land, the polders are now one of the largest tidal nature reserves in Belgium.
