De kreek slingert door de polders van Bazel en Kruibeke, een groen-blauw mozaïek van open water, slikken, schorren en moerasbos, pal langs de Schelde.
De huidige kreek is ontstaan door dijkdoorbraken in de 18e en 19e eeuw.
Het gebied maakt deel uit van het Sigmaplan voor waterveiligheid en natuurherstel. Bij extreem hoog water kan de kreek en het omringende gebied 300 miljoen liter water bufferen. Vroeger waren de polders grotendeels landbouwgrond; nu is het een van de grootste getijdennatuurgebieden van België.
