Locarno è un comune svizzero di 16 347 abitanti, capoluogo del distretto omonimo e polo regionale, sulla sponda settentrionale del Lago Maggiore, a cavallo tra le Prealpi Luganesi e le Alpi Lepontine.
La città è, per popolazione, in terza posizione nel Canton Ticino dopo Lugano e Bellinzona. Considerando tutta la zona urbana la popolazione supera le 50 000 unità. La stazione ferroviaria si trova all'esterno dei confini comunali, a Muralto, e uno dei suoi simboli, la Madonna del Sasso si trova sul territorio comunale di Orselina.
