LL'Waldhotel National è stato inaugurato il 10 ottobre 1910 come Waldsanatorium Arosa, un istituto di cura per malati polmonari. Questo, dopo che l'architetto di Chur Gottfried Braun aveva già acquistato intorno al 1902, "ai fini della costruzione di un edificio alberghiero", dalla comunità cittadina di Chur 3'652 metri quadrati di terreno agricolo nel bosco di Scheitenboda sopra il Lago di Obersee. Secondo le condizioni di acquisto, Braun doveva sviluppare il terreno a proprie spese con una strada di accesso di almeno tre metri di larghezza. La realizzazione di questo collegamento richiese del tempo, poiché la strada di Prätschlis all'epoca si fermava all'attuale hotel Belvédère-Tanneck e la Hohe Promenade non esisteva ancora.
