Fondata nel 1865 come tecnico privato, l'attuale Hochschule può vantare una serie di famosi laureati, ad esempio i costruttori automobilistici August Horch e Fritz Opel o l'inventore della televisione a colori PAL, Walter Bruch. Nel campus si trova il Galgenberg, che in passato veniva utilizzato come luogo di esecuzione. La particolarità del luogo sono le pietre del diavolo, costituite dal raro minerale cordierite. Questo materiale si trova altrove solo a Cipro.
