Opgericht in 1865 als privé-technische school kan de huidige hogeschool een aantal beroemde afgestudeerden voorleggen, zoals de autobouwers August Horch en Fritz Opel of de uitvinder van de PAL-kleurentelevisie Walter Bruch. Op de campus bevindt zich de Galgenberg, die vroeger als terechtstellingsplaats werd gebruikt. De bijzonderheid van de plaats zijn de duivelsstenen, die uit het zeldzame mineraal cordierietgesteente bestaan. Dit materiaal komt verder alleen nog voor op Cyprus.
