Il distretto di Roth si trova nel sud-est del distretto governativo bavarese della Media Franconia. Il distretto è membro della regione metropolitana di Norimberga.
Il distretto di Roth si trova nella "posizione geografica centrale" della Baviera, nella zona dei laghi franconi e nel parco naturale dell'Altmühltal. La parte meridionale del distretto occupa l'Alb francone con altezze fino a 612 m. Il nord appartiene al fronte dell'Alb e al bacino della Media Franconia. Il più grande corpo idrico naturale è la Rednitz, che sul territorio del comune di Georgensgmünd nasce dalla confluenza dei suoi affluenti, la Rezat francone e la Rezat sveva, poi scorre verso est, e successivamente verso nord, uscendo nuovamente dal distretto prima di Schwabach.
