Schmallenberg era nel XIX secolo il centro dell'industria metallica. Successivamente qui si sviluppò l'industria tessile. Il soprannome della città, "Città dei Calzini", si riferisce all'attività tessile dell'azienda Falke, che produce calze qui. Oggi circa un quarto della popolazione lavora nel settore del legno, nella silvicoltura e nel turismo. Schmallenberg dispone di numerosi sentieri escursionistici intorno alla città, che vi portano nei boschi e sulle colline. In totale oltre 2.500 km.
