Frohburg si trova circa a metà strada tra Lipsia e Chemnitz, al confine tra la baia di bassa pianura di Lipsia e il paese delle fortezze e delle brughiere sassoni, a circa 35 km a sud di Lipsia e 10 km a sud di Borna. A Frohburg scorrono il ruscello Wyhra e attraverso alcuni quartieri i torrenti Eula e Kleine Eula.
Il nome è considerato una germanizzazione del tipo di nome francese delle fortezze del periodo delle crociate, che nel medio basso tedesco significava "vro", equivalente a "la fortezza che rendeva felici o dove si viveva una felice vita di cavaliere".
