Il Grüntopf si trova al margine nord del quartiere di Grösdorf, a destra dell'Altmühl, che è cresciuto insieme a Kipfenberg. Alle pendici di una roccia, sul versante inferiore della valle, sgorga la sorgente carsica a circa 390 m s.l.m. e aziona una ruota da mulino in legno storica. Il torrente in uscita sfocia nell'Altmühl dopo meno di 300 metri.
La sorgente carsica ha una portata media di 140 litri al secondo ed è in diretto collegamento con una dolina a Denkendorf. Nei controlli dell'acqua di contrasto effettuati nel 1958 a Denkendorf, distante 5 km, sono state trovate alcune ore dopo tracce dei sali del test nell'acqua del Grüntopf. Il bacino della sorgente ha un diametro di circa 6 metri e appare leggermente verde.
