A partire dal 1700, i rifugiati religiosi dalla Francia formarono una propria comunità ecclesiastica. La comunità crebbe nel tempo grazie all'arrivo di persone da altre aree. Negli anni 1896–1899, la chiesa insieme alla casa del predicatore annessa fu costruita secondo un progetto di Georg Weidenbach e Richard Tschammer. L'intero complesso è considerato il primo esempio di un'architettura comunitaria uniforme. Fu premiato con il primo premio all'Esposizione Universale di Parigi.
La chiesa, costruita nello stile neorinascimentale con il suo caratteristico campanile alto 73 metri, si trova al Tröndlinring, a nord del centro storico. La consacrazione della chiesa avvenne il 12 marzo 1899. Durante i pesanti bombardamenti su Lipsia del 4 dicembre 1943, essa fu danneggiata, e la ricostruzione si protrasse fino al 1969.
