La Croce al Merito di Guerra fu istituita l'8 dicembre 1914 dal Principe Leopoldo IV di Lippe e poteva essere conferita a tutte le persone che si fossero distinte per il coraggio o per particolari meriti in guerra, oppure per meriti acquisiti in patria a favore degli interessi dell'esercito, ad esempio per i servizi alle truppe, la cura dei feriti, attività ufficiali o private che avessero contribuito al successo bellico.
