L'isola di Bislich si trova tra Ginderich e Xanten nel distretto di Wesel ed è uno dei pochi paesaggi fluviali ancora esistenti in Germania. Geograficamente parlando, però, non è un'isola. L'area totale è di 12 km², di cui 10,53 km² sono designati come riserva naturale.
L'isola di Bislich è emersa a causa dei cambiamenti nel corso del fiume Reno. Ai tempi dei Romani, accanto all'attuale Bislich esisteva un'isola nel Reno che era circondata a sud da un meandro e a nord dal Reno stesso. In seguito, il letto del fiume si è spostato sempre più a sud, costringendo il villaggio di Birten a spostarsi, fino a trovarsi completamente nell'area dell'attuale Altrhein di Xanten circa 200 anni fa.
