Il cimitero principale di Karlsruhe è uno dei più antichi cimiteri parco comunali tedeschi. Nel 1871 iniziarono i primi progetti per l'istituzione di un nuovo campo di sepoltura al di fuori del centro città. Il cimitero fu creato nel 1874 da Josef Durm nell'area di Rintheim, a est della città vera e propria, dopo che il vecchio cimitero situato nel centro di Karlsruhe era diventato troppo piccolo. Il cimitero principale è aumentato dalla sua dimensione originale di 15,3 ettari nel 1873 a una dimensione attuale di oltre 34 ettari. Attualmente, nel cimitero si trovano le tombe di più di 32.000 defunti.
