La Berkelroute attraversa regioni incontaminate e ci riporta continuamente nel passato. La Berkel ha origine a Billerbeck, ai piedi delle Baumberge. Attraversa Coesfeld, Gescher, Stadtlohn e Vreden, prima di raggiungere i Paesi Bassi. Attraverso Eibergen, Borculo, Lochem e Almen, sfocia a Zutphen nell'IJssel.
Merita una sosta la riserva naturale Zwillbrocker Venn con la sua colonia di fenicotteri. Hai voglia di storia culturale? Allora dirigiti verso la città delle campane Gescher, la città dei vasi Stadtlohn o al museo Hamaland di Vreden. A una comunità la Berkel ha addirittura dato il nome: Berkelland. Qui le chiese del villaggio, i mulini ad acqua e altri edifici storici invitano alla visita. Anche il panorama museale offre vere rarità, come ad esempio il museo dei pompieri o il museo dei cristalli a Borculo.
