La torre del mercato si trova sul lato nord del Vecchio Mercato di Ballenstedt, a nord-est del Vecchio Municipio.
Mentre le due torri cittadine della Porta Inferiore e della Porta Superiore possono essere datate relativamente con certezza a metà del 16° secolo, si può ritenere che la torre del mercato sia stata costruita un po' prima nel 16° secolo come torre campanaria. Poiché Ballenstedt viene menzionato per la prima volta come cittadina già nel 1457, cioè quasi 100 anni prima del privilegio municipale, e quindi possedeva il diritto di mercato ma non aveva ancora mura cittadine, la torre potrebbe aver avuto anche una funzione di protezione per questo luogo di mercato. Tuttavia, con l'istituzione della città intorno all'anno 1544, questa torre fu eretta.
