De markttoren staat aan de noordzijde van de Oude Markt van Ballenstedt, noordoostelijk van het Oude Raadhuis.
Hoewel de twee stadspoorten torens van het Onder- en Bovenpoort relatief veilig in het midden van de 16e eeuw kunnen worden gedateerd, kan men bij de markttoren aannemen dat deze iets eerder in de 16e eeuw als kloktoren is gebouwd. Aangezien Ballenstedt al in het jaar 1457, dus bijna 100 jaar vóór het stadsprivilege, voor het eerst als vlek werd genoemd, en derhalve het marktrecht had, maar nog geen stadsmuur bezat, zal de toren ook een beschermende functie voor deze marktplaats hebben gehad. Ten laatste met de stadsontwikkeling rond het jaar 1544 werd deze toren opgericht.
