Originariamente, il luogo Schwerin portava il nome di Westhofen, una designazione comune in Vestfalia per un luogo situato a ovest di un luogo più grande. Faceva parte del comune di Rauxel e confina a ovest con il vecchio Castrop e a est con la comunità di Frohlinde.
Nel 1878 fu fondata a Westhofen la miniera Graf Schwerin. Con la costruzione di case coloniche per i minatori, Westhofen crebbe fino a diventare un piccolo luogo con piazza del mercato, negozi e ristoranti. Nel 1936 il luogo fu ufficialmente rinominato Schwerin.
