Oorspronkelijk droeg de plaats Schwerin de naam Westhofen, een in Westfalen gebruikelijke benaming voor een plaats die ten westen van een grotere plaats lag. Het viel onder de gemeente Rauxel en grensde in het westen aan het oude Castrop en in het oosten aan de boerenplaats Frohlinde.
In 1878 werd in Westhofen de mijn Graf Schwerin opgericht. Door de oprichting van koloniewoningen voor de mijnwerkers groeide Westhofen uit tot een kleine plaats met een markt, winkels en horecagelegenheden. In 1936 werd de plaats officieel hernoemd naar Schwerin.
