Nel 1983 gli appassionati locali di storia fondarono l'Associazione Sögelse per la Storia Locale e il Turismo, nota dal 1985 come l'Associazione Sögelse per la Storia Locale (Heimatverein Sögel e.V.). Già alla sua fondazione si espresse il desiderio di avere un proprio museo storico locale. Tuttavia, ci sarebbero voluti altri sei anni prima che la prima vanga venisse piantata nel terreno del cosiddetto pascolo Fehnwiese.
L'associazione storica locale ebbe la fortuna di poter acquistare una casa in legno della famiglia Niemann a Wettrup, vicino a Fürstenau, che era sulla lista di demolizione. La struttura in legno e le travi di questa casa risalgono al 1807, il che la rende più di 200 anni. Questa struttura in legno, un capolavoro di carpenteria, è stata utilizzata senza modifiche per la ricostruzione. La comunità e i membri dell'associazione storica locale collaborarono alla ricostruzione.
