La porta fu costruita intorno al 1300 come parte delle mura cittadine e serviva sia a scopo difensivo che per la riscossione dei pedaggi.
Il nome si riferisce al vicino villaggio di Graach , a cui la porta dava accesso. In origine, la porta aveva un pavimento con feritoie , sale d'attesa per i soldati e forse una saracinesca o un ponte levatoio in legno.
Nel 1689 , la porta fu parzialmente distrutta dalle truppe francesi di Luigi XIV. Nel 1714 , fu ricostruita e adibita a prigione. In seguito, fu utilizzata come rifugio per i senzatetto.
Nel 1985 la porta fu trasformata in un museo di storia locale.
