Prima che i cunicoli venissero restaurati venivano utilizzati per la coltivazione dei funghi, come suggerisce il nome di alcuni, oppure fungevano da ovili.
Per la sua costruzione, l'apertura e l'avanzamento all'interno delle gallerie è stata scavata a mano . Utilizzava trucioli e travi di legno, come nelle miniere , per sostenere le pareti e il soffitto.
