L'ex abbazia si trova nell'omonimo comune francese di Saint-Avit-Sénieur, nella regione della Nuova Aquitania, nel dipartimento della Dordogna, a circa 35 km a est di Bergerac, circa 50 km a ovest di Sarlat-la-Canéda, nella regione del Périgord. Il priorato è stato eretto in un luogo dove, ai tempi dei Merovingi, viveva un eremita di nome Avitus Senior. Era un soldato al servizio del re visigoto Alarico II, prima di ritirarsi come eremita.
