Caterina de' Medici fece realizzare i giardini del Jardin des Tuileries nel 1553 in uno stile italiano, con splendide fontane tra l'altro. Nel 1664, i giardini furono abbelliti su incarico di Colbert dal noto paesaggista André le Nôtre, con una larga avenue e aiuole geometriche.
