Nel 1915, nei boschi della città bassa, vicino alla stazione di smistamento, l'esercito tedesco installò in gran segreto un cannone a lunga gittata che sparava proiettili da 750 kg fino a 40 km. Gli obiettivi erano Compiègne, Villers-Cotterêts e Oulchy-le-Château, tre città che rifornivano il fronte francese. Questo cannone fu operativo dall'aprile 1915. Il 14 giugno a Compiègne esplodono granate nella città, nel castello e nel parco, scatenando il panico. Lo Stato Maggiore francese ordinò una ricognizione aerea. Quattro giorni dopo, Georges Guynemer, uno dei più famosi piloti di guerra francesi, individuò il luogo.
