La battaglia di Sedan ebbe luogo fra il 31 agosto ed il 2 settembre 1870; fu lo scontro decisivo della seconda fase della guerra franco-prussiana e si concluse con il totale accerchiamento e la resa dell'armata francese "di Châlons" al comando inizialmente del Maresciallo di Francia Patrice de Mac-Mahon, e, dopo il ferimento di quest'ultimo, dei generali Ducrot e de Wimpffen.
