Nel cuore di Bernay, il museo è ospitato nell'antica dimora dell'Abbazia di Notre-Dame. Costruito all'inizio del XVII secolo, l'architettura dell'edificio si ispira alle case padronali del Pays d'Auge. Dopo la Rivoluzione francese, la città di Bernay acquistò l'edificio per ospitare il suo museo municipale, inaugurato nel 1891.
Museo di Francia dal 2002, il Musée des Beaux-Arts de Bernay è custode di una collezione poliedrica tipica delle istituzioni del XIX secolo. Fin dalla sua fondazione, avvenuta con una delibera del consiglio comunale nel 1866, il museo è stato un veicolo di conoscenza e la sua esposizione permanente riflette oggetti d'arte e manufatti storici, combinando estetica e memoria per illuminare e interrogare i visitatori sul mondo che li circonda.
