Het museum ligt in het hart van Bernay en is gevestigd in het voormalige gebouw van de abdij Notre-Dame. Het gebouw werd gebouwd in het begin van de 17e eeuw en de architectuur is geïnspireerd op de landhuizen van het Pays d'Auge. Na de Franse Revolutie kocht de stad Bernay het gebouw om er haar gemeentemuseum in onder te brengen, dat in 1891 werd geopend.
Het Musée des Beaux-Arts de Bernay is sinds 2002 een Musée de France en bewaakt een veelzijdige collectie die typisch is voor 19e-eeuwse instellingen. Sinds de oprichting door een besluit van de gemeenteraad in 1866 is het museum een doorgeefluik van kennis. De permanente tentoonstelling is een afspiegeling van kunstvoorwerpen en historische artefacten en combineert esthetiek en geheugen om bezoekers te informeren en vragen te stellen over de wereld om hen heen.
