Vera e propria piccola fortezza, la Porte des Allemands è un emblema della città e deve il suo nome ai Cavalieri Teutonici, o Fratelli Ospitalieri di Notre Dame des Allemands, che fondarono un ospedale nelle vicinanze nel XIII secolo. È l'edificio più imponente rimasto dei bastioni medievali, sia una doppia porta che un ponte sulla Seille. Dalla Porte des Allemands è possibile intraprendere il tour dei bastioni, che comprende i resti delle fortificazioni della città di Metz.
