Chiamata affettuosamente "La Grosse Madeleine" per la sua sagoma tozza, la chiesa, la cui costruzione iniziò nel 1675, deve la sua originalità alla pianta centrale sormontata da una cupola, unica nel panorama religioso di Lille e rara nella regione.
La chiesa ha una pianta circolare, con il portico sormontato dalla sala dell'organo, il coro riccamente decorato e due cappelle laterali. La sua cupola raggiunge un'altezza di 55 metri e domina il quartiere di Lilla Vecchia.
Dal 2000, la chiesa è stata desantificata e oggi ospita una serie di eventi artistici e culturali per il pubblico.
