De kerk, waarvan de bouw begon in 1675, wordt liefkozend "La Grosse Madeleine" genoemd vanwege haar vierkante silhouet. De kerk dankt haar originaliteit aan haar centrale plattegrond met daarop een koepel, uniek in het religieuze landschap van Lille en zeldzaam in de regio.
De kerk heeft een cirkelvormig grondplan, met het portaal met daarboven de orgelzolder, het rijk versierde koor en twee zijkapellen. De koepel bereikt een hoogte van 55 meter en kijkt uit over de wijk Oud Lille.
Sinds 2000 is de kerk ontwijd en worden er verschillende artistieke en culturele evenementen georganiseerd voor het grote publiek.
