Il villaggio di Courbesseaux, che fu il quartier generale del contrattacco del generale de Castelnau il 25 agosto 1914, fu raso al suolo durante la Prima Guerra Mondiale. La Necropoli Nazionale ospita i corpi di 2.679 vittime dei combattimenti di questa guerra, in particolare quelli della battaglia di Grand-Couronné dell'agosto e settembre 1914.
Un grande monumento rende omaggio a queste vittime: un bronzo, scolpito da Eugène Gatelet nel 1924, mostra un giovane contadino in zoccolo che depone una corona di fiori sulla tomba di un soldato morto per la Francia.
Nel 1964 è stata eretta una semplice stele in memoria del generale Edouard de Castelnau, vincitore di questa battaglia. Questa prodezza gli valse il soprannome di "Salvatore di Nancy" e la promozione a Grande Ufficiale della Legione d'Onore.
