Il Castello d'Assier è una testimonianza esemplare della diffusione dell'arte rinascimentale al di fuori della Valle della Loira.
Costruito tra il 1518 e il 1535 nello stile dei nuovi castelli di piacere, fu opera di un ricco gentiluomo, Galiot de Genouillac, Grand Ecuyer di Francia, Gran Maestro di Artiglieria di Francesco I.
Aveva una vasta pianta quadrilatera, di cui rimane l'ala d'ingresso con lo spettacolare portale con portici, logge e frontoni. La facciata del cortile è decorata con campate di finestre e due grandi fregi, riccamente scolpiti con emblemi che si riferiscono alle funzioni militari di Galiot de Genouillac e alla leggenda di Ercole.
