El castillo de Assier es un testimonio ejemplar de la difusión del arte renacentista fuera del Valle del Loira.
Construido entre 1518 y 1535 al estilo de los nuevos castillos de recreo, fue obra de un acaudalado caballero, Galiot de Genouillac, Gran Ecuyer de Francia, Gran Maestro de Artillería de Francisco I.
Tenía una amplia planta cuadrangular, de la que se conserva el ala de entrada con su espectacular portal con pórticos, logias y frontones. La fachada del patio está decorada con vanos de ventanas y dos grandes frisos, ricamente esculpidos con emblemas que hacen referencia a las funciones militares de Galiot de Genouillac y a la leyenda de Hércules.
