La Trincea di Calonne è una strada lunga 25 chilometri che collega Verdun a Hattonchâtel. Costruito nel XVIII secolo per ordine del ministro di Luigi XVI, Charles Alexandre de Calonne, fu teatro di violenti combattimenti durante la Prima Guerra Mondiale. Arruolato nel 288° RI come tenente, Alain Fournier, autore di Le Grand Meaulnes, fu dato per disperso vicino a Dommartin la Montagne il 22 settembre 1914. Il suo corpo e quello dei suoi compagni furono ritrovati nel 1991 in una radura del bosco di Saint Rémy, a 200 metri dalla Trincea delle Calonne. Alain Fournier è ora sepolto nel cimitero nazionale di Saint Rémy la Calonne.
