Alla fine del Medioevo, in tempi instabili, gli abitanti dei villaggi trasformarono i loro villaggi in fortezze. Si tratta di un fenomeno che ha lasciato il segno nel Pays d'Issoire. Mareugheol è uno dei meglio conservati.
