Vitalie Rimbaud e i suoi figli si trasferirono in questa casa, che all'epoca era composta da tre appartamenti, nel 1869. Per sei anni, fino al 1875, abitò al primo piano, dove il giovane Arthur visse dall'età di 15 anni fino ai 21, durante un periodo di intensa creazione poetica. È senza dubbio qui che furono scritte alcune delle sue poesie famose in tutto il mondo.
