Lo stagno di 22 ettari si trova nella regione Nouvelle Aquitaine, mentre il rifugio e parte del terreno, nonché le strutture di accoglienza, si trovano nella regione Auvergne Rhône Alpes. Questo frammento di territorio si identifica con un bacino idrografico e con gli usi ancestrali dei due territori, di fatto separati da confini amministrativi, ma dove gli abitanti sono legati da una storia e perpetuano naturalmente i loro costumi e modi di vita.
Intorno allo stagno è stata creata una passerella, con un punto di osservazione per animali e piante, e sono state costruite passerelle per attraversare alcune zone umide intorno allo stagno, realizzate in legno e accessibili alle persone con mobilità ridotta.
